Why Ozoncare Products Are Paraben-Free
Ozoncare products do not contain parabens, but do you know why? Parabens are chemicals used to preserve and protect products from the proliferation of microorganisms, such as fungi and bacteria, consequently prolonging their shelf life. However, scientific evidence is associating parabens with the development of allergies, irritations, and sensitizations of the skin, premature aging of the skin, and some diseases such as breast cancer, melanoma, and fertility problems.
What Are Parabens?
Parabens are commonly used preservatives found in many personal care products to prevent the growth of harmful microorganisms and extend product shelf life. The most common types of parabens are methylparaben, propylparaben, ethylparaben, and butylparaben. These substances are typically found in makeup, deodorants, moisturizers, lotions, nail polishes, baby lotions, hair products, perfumes, tattoo ink, and shaving creams. They can also be found in certain foods and medications.
How Do Parabens Harm Health?
Studies confirm that parabens mimic estrogen in the human body, making them endocrine disruptors. This means they can block natural hormonal action and alter hormone levels. Evidence links parabens to:
- Reproductive organ damage
- Thyroid disorders
- Hormone-related cancers
- Obesity
Exposure to parabens through beauty products has been associated with early puberty in girls, according to a study published in Human Reproduction. They are also easily absorbed; pregnant women who used more personal care products had higher levels of parabens in their urine, according to a 2014 study published in Reproduction. A 2019 study also found a link between paraben exposure and gestational diabetes mellitus.
Regulatory Status
The European Commission has banned several types of parabens in personal care products. In the European Union, benzylparaben and pentylparaben are prohibited as preservatives. However, in Brazil, most parabens are still allowed in cosmetics. Despite being used in small doses, their frequent presence in various daily-use products can harm health and the environment.
A study published in Environmental International by researchers from the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences of Ribeirão Preto (FCFRP) of USP, in collaboration with American researchers, showed that Brazilian children are exposed to high levels of parabens. Endocrine disruptors can have a greater effect on children due to their critical hormonal balance during development.
Why Are Parabens Still Used?
Parabens are inexpensive preservatives for large industries. The American Cancer Society advises reading packaging labels to avoid products containing these substances. In Brazil, companies must indicate the use of parabens on the ingredient list.
